Overview

This large bird is part of the family of parrots known as Macaws. They live in the forests, woodlands and tropical savannahs of South America. They have beautiful vivid feather colourings of blue, yellow and iridescent green, with white skin around their eyes that is patterned with very small delicate black feathers. The feather markings around the eye are different on each individual, almost like fingerprints. They have zygodactylous feet, (2 toes facing forward and 2 toes back) this is to help them grip branches and move around in the trees. Their beak is special, it can move both the top and bottom, giving it a wider range. It is strong enough to crack the hardest nuts and gentle enough to peel a grape! Macaws are very expressive, communicating mainly through sight and sound. They show emotion through many ways including sharp and loud sounds, flushing their facial skin pink, fluffing up feathers, and head bobbing.
