Overview
The Green Aracari is a toucan, nearly the smallest species of toucan. They are found in the lowland forests of north eastern South America and in the north east Amazon basin. They are sexually dimorphic, which means there are differences between the males and females. Males have a black crown whereas the females is more reddish brown. They tend to forage in small groups, using a variety of calls to communicate and warn of any dangers.
Diet
They forage for ripe fruits in the trees, using their specially adapted beaks with serrated edges to help hold on to food, before they flick their beak upwards to throw the food up and swallow.
Reproduction
Breeding season occurs from February to June. They nest in tree cavities, where the female will lay between 2 and 4 eggs. They will share the incubation and the rearing of the chicks.
