Overview

This bird is endemic to the rainsforests on the island of Luzon in the Phillipines, and named for the vivid red patch on their chest which looks like a bleeding wound. Out of all the bleeding heart dove species the Luzon Bleeding Heart Dove has the most pronouced red patch on it chest, lending itself to the common name of "stabbed pigeon". They are shy and secretive, and a very quiet bird, rarely leave the ground except when nesting.

Diet

They will forage for fallen fruit, seeds and grubs on the forest floor.

Reproduction

Little is known about breeding in the wild. In captivity they will make a nest off the groud with twigs and leaves, laying 2 eggs. The eggs will be incubated for about 17 days.

These birds are considered vulnerable as they are facing threats from habitat destruction on their island and they are also being caught for the illegal pet trade.
